Rivian R2 robotaxi

Vehicle

Rivian R2 robotaxi is a planned fleet version of R2 for Uber’s network, with initial commercial deployments targeted for San Francisco and Miami in 2028. Rivian had begun delivering consumer R2 vehicles by the second quarter of 2026. Those deliveries and the future robotaxi programme answer different needs: buying an R2 today does not establish access to the announced fleet system or permission to stop driving.21

What did Rivian and Uber announce?

The March 2026 announcement describes an initial plan for 10,000 vehicles and an option to negotiate purchases of up to 40,000 more from 2030. Uber or its fleet partners would be the buyers. The larger headline therefore combines an initial deployment plan with a later option; it is not evidence that 50,000 finished robotaxis have been ordered or delivered.2

Uber's investment could reach US$1.25 billion through 2031 if autonomy milestones and other conditions are met. Those conditions matter because they connect the financing schedule to development progress. They do not supply a final delivery date for a particular city, a passenger fare or a purchase price for a private owner.2

Which hardware belongs to the robotaxi?

The partnership release discusses Rivian’s third-generation consumer autonomy platform, including cameras, radar, lidar and RAP1 chips. It targets that consumer autonomy platform for R2 in late 2026. Those details are background to the development programme. The final robotaxi hardware remains unconfirmed, along with the software and operating conditions needed to describe an actual fleet installation.2

The same rule applies to production. Rivian reported that consumer R2 deliveries had started by the second quarter of 2026. That is a vehicle-manufacturing milestone. It does not move the planned 2028 robotaxi service into the present or prove that the announced passenger-only functionality is available in a retail R2.12

What does the programme mean for a journey or a car purchase?

For a traveller, a useful future milestone would be a service that accepts the pickup and destination they need, with clear supervision and rider policies. A proposed launch in San Francisco or Miami leaves routes, hours, weather, airport access, children and accessibility to be specified. Those practical details cannot be read from a vehicle-order target.2

For a household choosing a car, begin with the journeys that require the most effort: a daily commute, long visits to relatives or school transport. Compare the retail R2’s delivered features and driver responsibilities for those journeys. The robotaxi announcement supplies a future direction and partners, while final fleet hardware and a usable ride service remain separate milestones.21

Can I book an R2 robotaxi now?

The announcement targets first commercial deployments in 2028. A current bookable R2 robotaxi service has not been established, and the proposed San Francisco and Miami launches do not define exact service areas. For travel now, use an available service that confirms your pickup, destination and passenger needs.2

Will a retail R2 automatically become a robotaxi?

The partnership does not establish that entitlement. It describes an autonomous fleet version for purchase by Uber or its fleet partners, while its sensor and chip discussion concerns a consumer platform. Confirm the features and responsibilities in the terms for your own vehicle; the robotaxi programme is not an upgrade promise for an existing retail R2.2

What will a ride or the robotaxi itself cost?

No robotaxi purchase price or final passenger fare is established by the announcement. The investment of up to US$1.25 billion is conditional programme financing through 2031, not a vehicle price or a fare subsidy. Child, accessibility, airport and privacy terms also remain to be established for the eventual passenger service.2

  1. 1. Rivian Q2 2026 earnings presentation filed with SEC

Rivian’s second-quarter 2026 presentation, filed with the SEC, reports consumer R2 deliveries. That manufacturing milestone does not establish a robotaxi fleet delivery or passenger service.

  2. 2. Uber and Rivian robotaxi partnership

The March 19, 2026 partnership announcement separates an initial 10,000-vehicle plan from an option to negotiate up to 40,000 additional purchases from 2030. Investment of up to US$1.25 billion through 2031 is conditional. Its consumer-platform sensor counts are not the final robotaxi specification, and the stated path toward greater automation does not supply a complete deployed operating context. Rivian Automotive, Inc. is the named partnership party. The Rivian brand and group manufacturing description do not establish the future fleet's exact legal manufacturer.
