comma starts with the car already in the driveway. Its openpilot software and comma devices offer a route to driving assistance for supported vehicles, with an owner managing the hardware and software setup. The driver must stay alert and ready to take control. The practical question is whether that combination would make ordinary driving easier for someone willing to look after the installation.78915

A software project with a hardware business

George Hotz founded comma. Forge dates the business’s origins to 2015, while the company’s SEC notices give 2016 as its Delaware incorporation year. The current terms identify Comma.ai, Inc. as the legal entity. These dates describe different parts of its beginnings: the reported start of the business and the formation of the corporation.1234

comma has developed hardware alongside the software. Its October 2023 account of comma 3X described a device with three cameras and a six-inch display, made in-house in San Diego. The later comma four took the idea into a smaller windshield device. In its November 2025 introduction, comma described the same compute, sensors and functionality as 3X in one-fifth the size. That comparison describes the hardware at launch.514

openpilot follows its own release history. As of October 26, 2026, its latest listed release was version 0.11.2, published on October 23. A device’s name does not tell you which software it is running. The installed version, exact car and vehicle integration all matter when comparing someone else’s experience with your own possible setup.1215

What the software asks of its owner

The version 0.11.2 README describes openpilot as alpha-quality research software and disclaims software warranties. Its safety documentation requires an alert, attentive driver who can resume manual control immediately. Those statements are central to understanding the product: the hardware purchase does not turn the driver into a passenger.913

Products and services

The software and devices belong together in an installation, but they have separate identities and support arrangements. The openpilot profile contains the detailed software discussion and distinct sections for comma 3X and comma four.5678

openpilot

openpilot is the open-source driver-assistance software. Compatibility depends on the exact vehicle model, year, market and required factory equipment. The supported-vehicle guidance is the place to check a particular car before treating a demonstration in another vehicle as relevant.715

comma four

As of October 26, 2026, comma four was the device offered in comma’s shop. The shop says it ships without software capable of controlling a car; compatible open-source software is installed separately. For an owner, ordering hardware and choosing the software are two distinct steps.8

comma 3X

comma 3X is the earlier hardware generation described in the 2023 introduction. Documentation still refers to both 3X and four. That continuing mention does not promise identical features or updates, and it does not supply a final 3X support date. Owners should check the guidance for their particular device and installed software.567

Would this fit how you use your car?

First match the exact car and its factory equipment to the compatibility guidance. Then consider how you would handle a problem. comma handles shop orders and hardware warranty issues, while openpilot questions go to the community Discord or GitHub. Someone expecting one vehicle-service desk to resolve every software issue should understand that division before ordering.615

Sharing a car also means sharing decisions about recorded journeys. The openpilot 0.11.2 README says driving data uploads are enabled by default, while driver-facing camera and microphone logging require opt-in. Review those settings with other drivers and consider what the recorded trips could reveal about everyday routines.13

Will it let me stop supervising the road?

No. openpilot’s safety documentation requires continuous attention and the ability to take control immediately. If your goal is to become a passenger, that driver role does not meet it. If the goal is assistance while remaining responsible for the drive, compatibility, setup and support are the next questions to resolve.6915
