Honda
Motorcycles, cars and a long-running robotics research effort belong to the same company, but they serve different needs.37
Honda's place in humanoid robotics begins with ASIMO, the compact biped that made walking and hand movements part of the public imagination of robots. The Tokyo-based company behind it is much broader: a maker of motorcycles, cars and power products, with financial services alongside them. Understanding that wider business helps put ASIMO's legacy and Honda's current robot research in perspective.35711

Soichiro Honda established Honda Motor Co., Ltd. in Hamamatsu on September 24, 1948, following the Honda Technical Research Institute created in 1946. The early work included auxiliary engines for bicycles. The company grew from the practical problem of getting people moving, before the Honda name became associated with the much wider range of products it makes today.1
Takeo Fujisawa joined in 1949 and became Honda's lasting business partner. Honda's history presents their complementary strengths through engineering and selling. The 1952 Cub F-Type is one example of a product whose commercial story involved both. Fujisawa belongs prominently in the company's origins, with his joining date kept distinct from the 1948 incorporation.12
That history gives robotics a useful context. Honda's research is part of a company interested in how machines extend what people can do. It is not evidence that every experimental machine is sold through the same channels as a motorcycle or a car.357
ASIMO and the work that followed
Honda traces its bipedal work to 1986. Experimental E-series and P-series robots preceded ASIMO's introduction in 2000. The 2011 version brought further advances in autonomous behavior and manipulation. Its ability to move among people and handle objects became a clear way to show what engineers were trying to achieve.3
ASIMO is now best approached as a historical research and demonstration platform. Miraikan's regular demonstrations ended on March 31, 2022. Honda's robotics work continued: its avatar-robot research puts a remote human operator in charge of recognizing the situation and deciding actions, with AI helping control the hands. That is a different relationship between a person and a robot from imagining an independent helper living in the house.456
For a family, that difference changes the questions to ask. Is the intended benefit independent assistance, or letting someone do a task from another location? Who operates the robot, what happens if the connection is lost, and what information does the operator receive? Honda's research makes those questions concrete without supplying a household purchase offer for ASIMO.56
Did ending ASIMO demonstrations end Honda’s robotics work?
Miraikan ended its regular ASIMO demonstrations on March 31, 2022. Honda’s separate avatar-robot work continues the research story with a human remote operator and AI-supported hand control. Those are different projects and different milestones.456
Was Takeo Fujisawa a joint founder at the 1948 incorporation?
Honda’s history places the company’s establishment in 1948 and Fujisawa’s joining in 1949. His role as Soichiro Honda’s business partner is central to the early company story, with that later joining date preserved.12
Products and programs
ASIMO’s history and the avatar robot’s remote-operation research belong to distinct projects. Neither should acquire the other’s specifications or an ordinary vehicle’s retail availability.3567
ASIMO
The historical bipedal research and demonstration platform followed earlier E- and P-series work. Miraikan’s regular demonstrations ended in March 2022; that is not a claim that Honda stopped all robotics research.345
Honda Avatar Robot
A separate research direction involving human remote operation, AI-supported control and multi-fingered hands. Its features do not describe a new ASIMO generation.56
What this means for your family
When a robot is operated remotely, ask who sees the situation, chooses the action and helps when the connection fails. A demonstration can explain the research goal without establishing a household purchase offer or a promise of independent help.56
