Wire-free or boundary-wire robot mower: which suits your garden?

The side passage, overhanging tree and place you can put the charger may tell you more than a mower's advertised lawn size. Here is how to choose a navigation system around the garden you actually have.

By Michael McLaughlin · AI assisted

An adult measures a garden gate while a robot mower waits on the lawn.

Imagine buying a mower for the grass behind your house, then discovering that it cannot make the trip through the side passage. The main lawn gets cut, but you have acquired a new job carrying a machine between patches of grass.

That is why we would start with the awkward part of the garden. Trace the journey from the charger to every area you want maintained. Include the gate, the strip beside the house and the boundary that disappears into next door’s lawn. A large central lawn can make a poor demonstration of the problem you need solved.

Investigate wire-free first if you want editable boundaries and can meet the exact model’s positioning requirements. Keep boundary wire on the shortlist when those requirements make the installation awkward. The choice turns on the complete route, including the return to the charger, rather than a universal winner between two labels.

What wire-free actually removes

A boundary-wire installation defines the working area with a physical loop. A wire-free mower uses another way to establish where it belongs. That might involve satellite positioning, cameras, LiDAR or a combination.

GPS on the feature list does not settle the question. Husqvarna’s 2023 Automower 450X manual describes boundary and guide wires alongside GPS-assisted coverage. The similarly named 450X NERA supports a separate EPOS arrangement for virtual boundaries. The suffix and installation package matter.1

These examples show the different arrangements, rather than a ranking or a claim that every version is sold in every country:

Arrangement Documented example Question that changes the choice
Physical perimeter and guide wires Automower 450X in its 2023 manual Can the required wire layout connect all your mowing areas?
Satellite positioning with a local antenna and camera assistance Navimow i105E/i108E with EFLS 2.0 Do the antenna, mower and charging location have suitable reception?
Network RTK combined with cameras Worx Vision Cloud on its UK site Does the exact local model support the service and installation you need?
Camera recognition of lawn boundaries Original Worx Landroid Vision WR235, North American manual Can it distinguish the edges, or will some need preparation?

Sources: Husqvarna’s installation documents,1 Navimow’s regional manual,2 and the separate Worx Vision and Vision Cloud descriptions.34

RTK is satellite positioning supplemented by correction data. A local reference station supplies those corrections from your property; network RTK supplies them over a connection instead. For Husqvarna’s EPOS cloud option, the mower still needs satellite reception and stable internet across the work area. Its local reference-station option does not require internet for navigation. Losing the garden antenna and losing the need for satellites are different things.1

Check the passage and the charger together

A passage has more than a width. There is the approach, the turn through the gate, the surface and what blocks the sky overhead. Ask whether the mower will travel through it, mow it, or both.

Even published width figures can describe different measurements. Husqvarna gives a recommended minimum of 60 cm between boundary wires when a guide wire is used, with different guidance for certain AWD models. Navimow’s i-series manual specifies a channel wider than 1 m. Those are not interchangeable promises about the width of a gateway.26

Put the charger on the sketch before choosing the mower. For compatible EPOS models, Husqvarna offers Support by Wire to help in weak-signal areas, but explicitly says it cannot compensate for poor satellite reception at the docking point. A convenient power socket beside the house may therefore be the wrong starting point for that installation.7

For a divided garden, we would ask a dealer to assess this complete journey before accepting a lawn-area rating as evidence of fit. The useful demonstration is the mower reaching the difficult lawn and getting home again.

Cameras and LiDAR make the choice more interesting

Tree cover does not automatically mean you must install wire. It does mean the mower’s other positioning methods deserve a closer look.

Navimow describes EFLS 2.0 as combining satellite information with a visual map. Worx says Vision Cloud combines RTK with stereo vision and uses visual landmarks and movement information when reception weakens. Mammotion’s LUBA mini AWD LiDAR page describes another combination: LiDAR, network RTK and vision. These are manufacturer descriptions, not proof that three systems will outperform two in your garden.245

Camera navigation also brings its own boundary questions. The original WR235 manual says continuous grass into a neighbour’s lawn needs a magnetic strip or a sufficiently wide non-grass separation. The grass can look equally mowable on both sides of a property line. Those instructions belong to that original Vision model, not automatically to Vision Cloud.3

Choose the upkeep you can live with

A damaged perimeter wire brings a particular recovery job. Husqvarna’s guide starts with connections and splices, then explains how to locate a break. Going without a perimeter loop removes that repair job, but leaves mapping, positioning and cleaning requirements. Navimow’s manual, for example, includes reception checks and regular camera-lens care.28

Before buying, find out what a stopped mower will ask you to do and who will be there to do it. This matters especially if the person setting it up is seldom home. A mower that is easy to rescue for one household may be an awkward responsibility for another.

Our recommendation is to choose the simplest supported installation that completes your garden’s route. For an open, connected lawn with suitable reception, start with a wire-free shortlist. For an enclosed passage or heavily sheltered corner, compare the exact camera or LiDAR arrangement with a wired alternative, and give the difficult section priority in any site assessment. A workable wire installation is preferable to buying a reception problem you already know about.

Keep the exact country’s model number and instructions beside the quote. Then choose on the mowing job it can complete, including getting home, rather than the number of sensors on the box.
