Rain, toys and fallen branches: when the garden changes

A lawn that was ready to mow yesterday may have a hose, a fallen branch or people playing on it today. A useful mowing schedule leaves room for those changes, even when the robot has obstacle detection and weather features.

Checking the lawn after the weather changes, imagined.

The trouble with setting a repeating mowing time is that the garden does not repeat itself. Furniture moves. A windy night leaves debris. Someone starts the sprinkler, or decides that the lawn is the right place for an afternoon game.

The robot may have features to respond, but those features do different jobs. Detecting an object, excluding an area and delaying work because of weather are separate abilities. A useful routine still gives someone responsibility for noticing what has changed outside.

Our approach is to treat the schedule as a plan you can interrupt. Keep the maker’s operating limits in charge, then let mowing fit around the garden’s other uses.

Rain is more than a yes-or-no feature

Two mowers can both have a weather response without responding in the same way. The original Worx Landroid Vision WR220/WR235 manual describes a rain sensor that sends the mower back to its base and a delay before mowing resumes. The documented Navimow i Series instead describes a Weather Adaptive feature using weather information, with configurable responses to rain, snow, heat, frost and strong wind.12

That distinction matters when shopping. Ask what triggers a pause, what information the system uses, what you must configure and what makes it resume. A weather feature’s name does not answer all four.

Also separate the product’s ability to live outdoors from the conditions in which its maker permits mowing. Navimow’s safety instructions favour dry conditions and prohibit mowing in bad weather such as heavy rain, thunderstorms or snow. Husqvarna’s 2023 Automower 420/430X/440/450X manual says not to operate in standing water.23 These are exact model instructions, not a universal weather rating for every robot.

If the scheduled start arrives while the garden is outside the relevant limits, a postponed cut is the sensible result. The calendar does not make unsuitable conditions suitable.

A camera does not clear the lawn

Obstacle recognition is useful, but a lawn check is still part of ownership. Navimow’s manual asks owners to remove stones, sticks, wires and other foreign objects. Husqvarna’s manual likewise calls for removing branches, tools and toys, and notes that an impact can damage blades.23

Think about the difference between a garden chair and its loose cover. One is a substantial object you want the mower to route around; the other is something you should put away. The distinction is practical: a detection system does not do the tidying the manual asks of you.

After a storm or a busy afternoon outdoors, the next useful action may be a walk around the lawn rather than a new app setting. Follow the exact model’s shutdown and handling instructions before clearing a blockage or inspecting the machine. Do not reach under a working mower to help it along.

People change the schedule too

The garden is not available for mowing simply because the app has an empty slot. Husqvarna’s cited manual says to park or switch the product off when people, especially children, or animals are in the work area, and recommends operating when the area has no activity. Navimow’s preparation instructions also say to keep children and pets off the lawn.23

Use those instructions to organize the routine. If the lawn is where the family gathers after school, plan the mowing elsewhere in the day, within all the model’s other operating requirements. A pet-detection mode is not permission to run a moving blade among people or animals.

Night is not automatically a solution. The same Husqvarna manual specifically warns about possible injury to animals at night, including hedgehogs.3 Choosing a quiet-looking time still requires attention to the garden and the full instructions.

What changed? Decision before the next cut
Rain or standing water Check actual conditions and the model’s operating limits, not just whether its timer will start.
Loose toys, branches or a hose Prepare the lawn as instructed; detection is not a substitute for removing prohibited objects.
People or animals using the lawn Interrupt or reschedule work according to the maker’s instructions.
A moved trampoline or new garden feature Reassess the affected area and use the exact model’s approved exclusion/setup guidance before relying on the old layout.

These decisions follow the scoped manuals above. Navimow’s guide, for example, discusses off-limit areas for a newly installed trampoline or grill.2 A changed layout deserves a fresh decision, not an assumption that yesterday’s map covers everything.

Look for a routine you can maintain

Before choosing a mower, imagine the least convenient ordinary week: changeable weather, a garden in use and someone away from home. Who checks conditions? Who changes the schedule? Who responds if it stops?

We would favour a setup whose pause, exclusion and restart behaviour you understand, with an owner willing to handle those decisions. That is a more useful promise than “all-weather” or a long list of recognized objects. A good result includes knowing when to leave the grass alone and let the garden be a garden.
