Aurora Driver combines hardware, software and data services for commercial freight. Its trucking operations do not offer a passenger ride for a family to book. For a transport business, the practical question is which truck, route and support arrangement would carry its load. Aurora’s freight service provides the commercial arrangement around the technology.13Reported
From the first haul to Aurora Driver 2
Aurora’s account of its first commercial driverless roundtrip places the journey between Dallas and Houston on April 27, 2025. Chris Urmson described riding in the rear seat as the truck hauled goods. That account is useful context for the word driverless: the driving task was automated, although a person was still in the vehicle.5Reported
A February 2026 update described a wider network including the Fort Worth-to-Phoenix lane. In July, Aurora announced Aurora Driver 2, combining its second-generation hardware kit and software with International LT Series trucks. Route expansion and hardware revision are separate developments, so an operator needs the configuration assigned to its own lane.62Reported
The July announcement says the new trucks operate without a person behind the wheel. It does not establish that every truck is empty or that remote support is absent. For a customer, the meaningful description includes the driving system, any onboard personnel, remote assistance and how a stopped vehicle is recovered.2Reported
What freight work would it need to do?
Start with an actual load and repeatable route, including the access roads and loading facilities at both ends. Ask which generation would run it, which conditions interrupt service and whether the customer or supplier handles the handover. A network expansion announcement is useful evidence of progress, but a route-specific operating agreement is what turns it into a dependable logistics option.63Reported
The current customer route is Aurora’s freight offering. The technology should therefore be compared with the requirements of a transport operation, including dispatch, maintenance and recovery. Its commercial freight progress does not establish a passenger service that a family can book.3Reported
How does the older Horizon name fit?
If an older Aurora article mentions Horizon, it is referring to a freight-service concept. The 2023 prospectus used the name for a driverless trucking subscription, while Aurora Connect referred to a separate ride-hailing concept. The two names describe different intended customers.4Reported
The old Horizon web address now takes visitors to Aurora’s freight page. That page calls the Aurora-provided service Aurora Driver for Freight and separately presents Volvo Autonomous Solutions’ Autona/freight offering. The redirect is a useful way to follow the product history; it does not supply an official date on which Horizon was renamed or retired.3Reported
Aurora currently invites business customers to discuss moving their freight with Aurora trucks. It places customer-owned full integration in its future roadmap, while its financial reporting describes an expected fee-per-mile or comparable service model. Neither description is a published rate card for an individual shipment.31Reported
For a shipper, the next step is to specify a recurring load and lane, then establish the contracting provider, truck supply, support and recovery arrangements. For a family browsing autonomous transport, this is background on goods movement. It is not an alternative passenger booking service.34Reported
Does the announced network cover my load and route?
Aurora’s February 2026 announcement describes Texas and Arizona lanes, including Fort Worth to Phoenix. Its July announcement identifies Driver 2 on International LT Series trucks. Those disclosures do not establish a complete Driver 2 route list or the weather, road and recovery limits for your shipment. Ask the provider to assess the full lane, including the facilities and access roads at both ends.623Reported
Does driverless mean there are no people involved?
Aurora’s first-haul account says Chris Urmson rode in the rear seat while the system drove. The July 2026 update describes trucks without a person behind the wheel. Neither statement establishes the absence of other onboard personnel or remote support. Ask who handles exceptions, a stopped truck and the handover of the load.52Reported
Am I buying a truck, software or a freight service?
Aurora’s current freight page invites business customers to move loads with Aurora trucks and describes customer-owned operation as a future option. It separately identifies Volvo Autonomous Solutions’ Autona/freight offering. Confirm the contracting provider, truck supply, maintenance and recovery responsibilities. The expected fee-per-mile or comparable model in Aurora’s filing is not a price quote for your shipment.31Reported
