A truck carrying goods has a different job from a car carrying a family. Aurora’s commercial work centres on freight businesses: the Aurora Driver combines hardware, software and data services, and the freight offering puts that technology to work on customer loads. For anyone following self-driving transport, Aurora offers a look at how automation is changing the movement of everyday goods.26

From automated-driving research to freight

Chris Urmson, Drew Bagnell and Sterling Anderson founded Aurora in 2017. Urmson had led autonomous-vehicle work at Carnegie Mellon and Google, bringing that background into a business built around the driving system. He remains Aurora’s chief executive and chairman.13

Aurora entered its present listed structure through a business combination completed on November 3, 2021. Aurora Innovation, Inc. is the issuer of the Class A common shares traded on Nasdaq as AUR. Its ownership structure also includes Class B shares. The 2021 transaction belongs to the financing and corporate history of a business whose own founding account starts in 2017.124

Commercial freight operations began in April 2025. By July 29, 2026, Aurora was describing Driver 2: second-generation hardware and software integrated with International LT Series trucks. The company also reported agreements with Value Truck and Charger Logistics. These milestones describe a developing freight operation, with particular customers and truck configurations.25

What driverless means in this story

Urmson’s account of the first commercial driverless roundtrip says he rode in the rear seat while the system drove. The July 2026 update describes trucks operating without a person behind the wheel. Those descriptions identify who performs the driving task; they do not establish that every truck is empty or that remote assistance is absent. Support and recovery remain useful questions for a freight customer.59

Products and services

Aurora’s portfolio connects a driving system with ways for businesses to use it. The system name identifies the technology, while the service provider and truck arrangement determine how a load is moved.26

Aurora Driver

The Aurora Driver is the integrated hardware, software and data-services system. Driver 2 is the generation described in the July 2026 International LT update. The linked system profile explains that history and the questions a fleet should ask about its own operating conditions.25

Aurora Driver for Freight

Aurora’s freight page invites businesses to move loads using Aurora trucks. Customer-owned operation appears in its future plans. The same page separately identifies Volvo Autonomous Solutions’ Autona/freight offering, so the provider and truck supply need to be established for each arrangement. Aurora’s July update targeted Q1 2027 for driverless Volvo VNL Autonomous operations. That was a plan, not a completed launch.56

Aurora Horizon

Horizon is a historical freight name. The 2023 prospectus used it for a planned driverless trucking subscription, while Aurora Connect referred to a separate ride-hailing concept. The freight page now uses Aurora Driver for Freight, the name to look for when making a business enquiry.67

Could it serve the route you need?

Start with a recurring load and the complete journey, including loading facilities and access roads. Then ask which truck and Driver generation would serve it, who handles the handover and what happens when the truck cannot continue. A customer agreement or a new generation announcement is useful context, but the operating arrangement must fit the actual lane.56

Can a family book an Aurora ride?

The offering described here moves business freight. Aurora’s earlier Connect concept is part of its history and does not establish a passenger service available to book today. A family following Aurora is learning about the movement of goods; someone arranging a journey needs a passenger service with its own booking and coverage information.67

Aurora gives 2017 as its founding year and names Chris Urmson, Drew Bagnell and Sterling Anderson. Urmson’s earlier Carnegie Mellon and Google work is described by the company. Includes reported information. Source checked 2026-10-26.

  2. Aurora Q2 2026 10-Q

Unaudited U.S. GAAP consolidated results for April 1 through June 30, 2026, reported in whole USD millions. Revenue is 2 and net loss is 270. 3. Aurora leadership

The leadership page identifies Urmson as CEO and chairman. It dates Bagnell’s earlier CTO role to December 2016, while the company history gives 2017 as the founding year. These describe different milestones; no incorporation date or current role for every founder is inferred. Includes reported information. Source checked 2026-10-26.

  4. Aurora 2025 10-K

  5. Aurora Q2 operational update

The July 29, 2026 update describes Driver 2 on International LT Series trucks, customer agreements and a Q1 2027 target for Volvo VNL Autonomous driverless operations. A target is not an achieved launch. “Without a person behind the wheel” does not establish an empty truck or absence of remote support. Includes reported information. Source checked 2026-10-26.

  6. Aurora current freight page

The freight page distinguishes Aurora Driver for Freight from Volvo Autonomous Solutions’ Autona/freight. Customer-owned operation is described as future work. 7. Aurora historical 2023 prospectus

The 2023 prospectus used Aurora Horizon for a planned trucking subscription and Aurora Connect for a separate ride-hailing concept. These historical descriptions do not establish current passenger availability. Includes reported information. Source checked 2026-10-26.

  9. Aurora first commercial driverless haul

Urmson’s account of the April 27, 2025 Dallas-Houston commercial roundtrip says he rode in the rear seat. Automated driving in that account did not mean nobody was onboard. Includes reported information. Source checked 2026-10-26.
