The Waymo Driver combines software, sensors and onboard computing to drive vehicles in Waymo's passenger service. It is the technology behind the journey, separate from the car carrying it. Waymo describes the rider as a passenger who does not need to drive, a useful distinction when comparing the service with assistance that requires attention behind the wheel.2Reported

How does it understand the road?

Waymo describes lidar, cameras and radar feeding onboard computing. Detailed maps work with current sensor observations to help the vehicle locate itself, understand nearby traffic and plan movement. These explain the company's approach; where it can take a passenger still depends on the service's operating area and conditions.2Reported

The fifth-generation Driver is associated with Waymo's Jaguar I-PACE. Waymo describes 29 cameras on those cars. That count belongs to the I-PACE configuration and does not describe the sixth-generation system or every future Waymo-equipped vehicle.12Reported

Which generation is in the vehicle?

The sixth-generation Driver is associated with the Ojai and designed for adaptation to other platforms, including Hyundai's IONIQ 5. Waymo announced autonomous Ojai trips for employees and guests on February 12, 2026. On May 28 it invited selected riders in San Francisco, Phoenix and Los Angeles to forthcoming Ojai trips. Its September 14 announcement described majority-Ojai fleets in Las Vegas, Denver and San Diego.345Reported

A generation name identifies a technology family, while an individual vehicle also has a particular software release and operating limits. Ask for those details when comparing systems. A partnership with a carmaker does not establish an installation option for an ordinary privately owned car.123

Are you choosing a ride or comparing technology?

For a ride, start with the service's current area and rider rules. For a technical comparison, identify the vehicle, generation, software release and conditions in which it operates. A broad automation label cannot answer whether a particular journey is available.21Reported

Waymo's passenger description explains the rider's driving responsibility. If operational support matters to your comparison, ask separately when remote assistance or an onboard specialist may be involved. Those are different questions from whether the passenger has to drive.21Reported
