Agility Robotics builds Digit to move goods through industrial workplaces. At GXO’s SPANX operation, earlier Digit robots move storage totes from mobile robots onto conveyors. Agility announced Digit 5 in September 2026, with early access expected in the first half of 2027.46

Oregon roots, then a warehouse purpose

Jonathan Hurst, Damion Shelton and Mikhail Jones established Agility in 2015 out of Oregon State University's Dynamic Robotics Laboratory. Hurst brought university research in legged movement; the university describes Jones as an OSU graduate and Shelton as Hurst's graduate-school classmate. Cassie, an earlier walking platform, helped put that research into the hands of other researchers.23

Digit gave that work an industrial direction. In June 2024, GXO announced a multi-year Robots-as-a-Service agreement for its SPANX operation. The task was specific: lift totes from other mobile robots and place them on conveyors. The attraction of a humanoid here is its potential to connect existing pieces of a warehouse process without asking every piece to be redesigned.6

Chief executive Peggy Johnson previously led Magic Leap and worked at Microsoft and Qualcomm. Agility combines its robots with Arc fleet software and RoboFab in Salem, Oregon. The company describes RoboFab as designed to make up to 10,000 robots annually at full scale.245

RealSense's March 25, 2025 case study identifies a D455 depth camera in Digit's neck. That account describes a component in the featured Digit, rather than establishing a four-camera total or Digit 5's sensor configuration. Historical Intel RealSense branding does not identify the current contracting supplier.1112

Agility announced Schaeffler as a minority investor and an intended Digit customer. In its October 21, 2026 update, Agility named Schaeffler among customers operating Digit. Those investor and customer roles do not establish that Schaeffler supplies a particular bearing for the robot.1314

Amazon announced Digit testing on October 18, 2023. Agility's February 2026 Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada announcement later included Amazon among companies deploying Digit. The latter is Agility's account; the inspected sources do not establish a network-wide Amazon rollout, current site count or fleet size.1516

Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada signed a commercial robot-service agreement with Agility after a pilot, announced on February 19, 2026. Agility's October 21 update named TMMC among customers operating Digit. The named customer is TMMC, and the official agreement does not establish a delivered fleet quantity.1416

On October 22, 2026, Agility announced IGX Thor as planned standard onboard compute for Digit 5's general-availability version, with early access expected in the first half of 2027. That forward-looking selection does not establish delivered Digit 5 machines or the compute used in earlier Digit generations.17

A new generation changes the comparison

Agility says earlier Digit robots accumulated more than 65,000 operating hours and reached a 100,000-tote milestone at GXO. Its deployment guide places fourth-generation Digit inside a sectioned-off workcell. Digit 5 aims to work closer to people, with some safety features still in development. That makes the generation and delivered safety configuration important parts of any comparison.4710

Agility’s deployment process starts by defining a workflow, recreates the task for validation and then moves into a site pilot. A customer can use that process to compare useful work completed, operator help and disruption to the rest of the facility. A clear task makes the outcome easier to assess.67

Products and their roles

Digit is the robot family; Arc is the software platform supporting its operation. Earlier deployments and the planned Digit 5 rollout describe different generations.24

A practical task makes progress easier to judge

Digit’s warehouse work offers a concrete example for anyone following the progress of humanoids. Its usefulness depends on a defined task, a prepared workplace and a service relationship. Agility’s documented offering serves industrial customers; a household buying route is not established.67

Which job would make a robot worth having?

Describe one transfer: which container needs moving, where it starts and where it must arrive. Then ask to see the exact Digit generation complete it, including recovery after a failed pickup. Compare the operator time and preparation with the existing workflow. Agility’s customer program is designed to validate a workflow before expansion.6710
