Digit 4: the transfer between machines
GXO describes a concrete job for the earlier commercial Digit: taking totes from mobile robots and placing them onto conveyors. Its multi-year Robots-as-a-Service agreement provides a useful starting point for evaluating a similar transfer. Specify the containers, pickup point, conveyor height and required pace, then assess how the proposed robot fits that handoff.42
Agility's deployment guide describes Digit 4 working in a sectioned-off workcell during pilots and full service deployments. Engineers configure site Wi-Fi, mapping, Arc and a defined workflow, and train site staff. Repairs, software updates and cloud monitoring continue to be part of the operation after installation.5
Digit 5: a different body and tool choice
Agility gives preliminary Digit 5 figures of 1.81 m in height, 129 kg in mass, a 22.7 kg maximum repeated-lifting capacity and a maximum reach height of 2.2 m. These describe the announced new generation. The Digit 4 warehouse work and the Digit 5 specification sheet belong to different robots.234
Digit 5 is designed for swappable grippers using ISO-standard mounting flanges. Ask which tool comes with the proposal and whether it can reliably pick up the actual container or part. Tool choice should follow the object and the placement it needs.2
Shorter work cycles with charging breaks
Agility says the planned Nyobolt battery system targets 90 minutes of work followed by a nine-minute charge. Draw out that cycle for the task being considered: where would the robot charge, what electrical equipment is required, and what happens to incoming work during the pause? These are development targets for Digit 5, so the proposal needs to identify the delivered battery and charging arrangement.63
People nearby, and data leaving the site
Digit 5's announced design includes human detection, visual and auditory cues, and an independent safety controller. Agility says some safety features remain in development and that safety features do not eliminate all operational risk. Ask for the operating boundaries and site assessment for the delivered system before planning how people will move around it.23
Arc connects fleet activity with warehouse and manufacturing systems. Agility says sensory data is processed locally, while essential health and diagnostic information is sent to Arc. It describes encrypted transmission, separated customer data and encrypted storage on the robot. The installation agreement should make retention, access and training use clear for the people responsible for the site.2
When could Digit 5 arrive?
Agility expects early access in the first half of 2027 and general availability by the end of 2027. Its announcement describes a US and Canada context, with expansion to the EU and UK planned subject to regulatory marks. These dates are rollout plans for Digit 5.62
Can a family order Digit for chores?
The documented customer route is an industrial deployment or business agreement. Request the exact generation, tools, installation work and ongoing service terms in the proposal. GXO's service agreement describes that customer's arrangement; it does not supply a universal purchase price or establish a household ordering option.45
Define a useful transfer before a pilot
What would make a tote transfer worth automating at this site? Write down the objects, pickup and drop-off points, required pace and the recovery needed if a transfer fails. Then compare the proposed workflow with the existing one, including staff training, charging breaks and service. Keep evidence from Digit 4 deployments alongside, but separate from, Digit 5 development targets.45623
