Pollen Robotics makes robots people can build with, control and program. Based in Bordeaux, France, the company grew out of robotics research and now offers two compact starting points: Microduck for movement and physical behaviors, and Reachy Mini for expressive interaction.1347

From a research lab to robots you can work on

Matthieu Lapeyre and Pierre Rouanet founded Pollen in 2016 after working in Inria’s Flowers team. Their research explored how robots learn through interaction with people. In Inria’s account, an early Poppy arm grew into the foundations of Reachy, which launched at CES 2020.17

Reachy’s next steps included VR teleoperation in 2021 and a second-place finish in the 2022 ANA Avatar XPRIZE. That history concerns a remotely operated research avatar. It does not establish that the smaller robots can handle the same objects or complete household jobs on their own.134

The open-source approach makes sharing and experimentation part of the product story. For an owner, the useful question is how much participation a particular project needs: assembling a kit, connecting a computer, choosing an app or writing code. A friendly face does not remove those choices.16

Pollen now identifies itself as part of Hugging Face. That connection places the robot maker alongside a wider AI community, while each robot still has its own hardware, software and purchase terms. A parent-company relationship should not be read as a promise about included AI services or long-term support.146

Is a small Pollen robot suitable for a young child?

Pollen recommends its development platforms for users aged 16 and over and says they are not children’s products. For a shared family project, start with that guidance and decide who will handle setup, supervision and maintenance.5

Do Microduck and Reachy Mini do the same job?

No. Microduck is a small biped for movement and behavior experiments. Reachy Mini is an expressive companion platform for interaction and creative coding. Choose the activity first, then check the exact model’s requirements.34

Will Reachy Mini work without my computer?

The Wireless version has Raspberry Pi CM4 processing onboard. Lite uses a connected Mac, Windows or Linux computer. Onboard processing alone does not establish which AI conversations or apps work offline, so check the service used by the application you want.6

Choosing a project for your household

A small robot can be an enjoyable shared project when someone wants to handle setup and ongoing experiments. Check the named model and variant rather than assuming every Pollen robot has the same features.345
