Would a robot mower save the work you want to stop doing?

A robot can take over regular cutting while leaving you with edges, upkeep and the occasional interruption. Whether that is worthwhile depends on the job you dislike, the help you already pay for and the costs of your actual garden.

By Michael McLaughlin · AI assisted

An adult sits with a drink while a robot mower is on the lawn and hand tools rest by a flowerbed.

The most useful comparison is with the way your lawn gets cut now. If you mow it yourself, a robot may release time without reducing a large bill. If a gardener visits, the saving depends on which parts of that visit you can stop buying. If you enjoy mowing but hate trimming around beds, the robot may be taking over the wrong chore.

Start there, before deciding whether a mower will “pay for itself.” That phrase needs an alternative, a time period and a clear account of the work left behind.

Separate cutting from finishing the garden

A mower’s regular route is only part of lawn care. The instructions for Navimow’s documented i Series still ask owners to prepare the lawn and remove debris. Its maintenance section calls for weekly adult inspection, cleaning and replacing worn parts.1 That does not tell us how long your inspection will take, but it does tell us there is an owner job to budget for.

Edges deserve their own conversation. Worx’s UK Vision Cloud FAQ says manual trimming can remain in difficult corners, despite the system’s edge-cutting features.2 Ask a seller to identify those corners in your garden. “Cuts close to the edge” is less useful than knowing whether you will still take out the trimmer every weekend.

Write the handover in two columns. On one side put the work the proposed mower is expected to do: routine cutting in its supported area. On the other put the work you or a paid helper will retain: preparation, missed edges, cleaning, blade care, storage and recovery. Keep uncertain tasks visible until the exact model and installation settle them.

A person buying relief from pushing a mower may find that exchange attractive. Someone trying to stop all garden maintenance should expect a narrower result.

Compare with the bill you can actually remove

Suppose a gardening service cuts the lawn, trims the edges and also handles planting beds. Buying a robot does not automatically cancel that whole bill. Ask for a revised quote covering the work that remains. The difference between the two quotes is the cash saving to compare with ownership, rather than the full original charge.

For a lawn you cut yourself, count expenses that would genuinely disappear. Fuel or electricity, maintenance and eventual replacement may be relevant; costs for equipment you must keep are still yours. Money already spent on a working mower is not recovered simply because it stops being used. Include resale proceeds only if you actually expect to sell it, at an amount you can support.

Keep your time alongside the money. Record how long you currently spend cutting and finishing over a representative period, then distinguish the tasks a robot would remove from those it would retain. You can put a personal value on that time if it helps, but keep it separate from cash savings. An hour with your family or a free Saturday can be valuable without appearing as cash in your bank account.

Build a budget with your own figures

Use one currency and one period, such as the first year after installation. Fill this worksheet with actual quotes, bills or clearly marked estimates. An unknown entry stays unknown, rather than becoming zero.

Item you supply What to include
Delivered mower and required equipment The exact regional package, taxes and delivery; distinguish required accessories from optional extras.
Initial setup Installation quote, necessary garden preparation and any paid setup assistance.
Recurring operation Your electricity cost, replacement blades and any required connectivity or service subscription.
Maintenance and repair Parts, paid servicing, transport to a repairer and a separately identified uncertainty allowance.
Work still bought or done Remaining edging, garden visits and your own upkeep time.
Alternative for the same period The revised gardening quote or the continuing cash cost of your present method.

First-year robot cash cost = purchase and setup + recurring operation + maintenance and repair + retained paid work. Compare that total with the alternative for the same period. Keep your time record separate so the decision shows both money and effort.

Then make a second view for a following year without charging the purchase price again. Do not assume identical repair spending, guaranteed resale value or a battery life the maker has not established for your use. Navimow’s manual says battery life depends on usage and working hours, and points owners toward service when performance deteriorates.1

Decide who handles the interruptions

Routine upkeep and unexpected work feel different. A scheduled cleaning session may fit easily into the week; a stopped mower while you are away may not. Husqvarna’s wire-fault guide, for example, starts with connection and splice checks before explaining how to locate a damaged section.3 It establishes a possible recovery job, not how often it will happen in your garden.

Before buying, ask who will respond, what local service is available and which tasks the support arrangement actually includes. Read the relevant maintenance and storage instructions before accepting a “maintenance-free” impression. These questions matter even when navigation and coverage have already been sorted out.

Our preference is to buy a robot mower when it removes a substantial chore you actually want to stop doing and the remaining work has a willing owner. A documented cash saving strengthens the case, but it is not the only reason to buy. If the figures depend on cancelling help you still need or pretending your own maintenance takes no time, revise the plan before buying the machine.
