The maker ended Essential sales on June 30, 2026. The SPIKE app remains within LEGO's stated support period through June 30, 2031, but no new features are promised after retirement. This is a supported-software period for an ended hardware line, not evidence that all replacement electronics remain in stock.2
Essential supports icon and word blocks. LEGO explicitly says it does not support Python, even though the shared SPIKE app includes a Python editor for Prime. The consulted technical FAQ also describes Essential as streaming its program from the connected device. A buyer wanting a small standalone Python robot should not assume this kit supplies that workflow.3
A tablet used for lessons may not handle every maintenance step. LEGO's consulted FAQ directs Essential Hub updates through USB on a compatible Windows, Mac or Chromebook computer, and says the update cannot be completed on an iPad or Android tablet. Check the current app instructions on the equipment that will actually be available, and keep the supplied charging/data cable with the kit.34
LEGO's support portal listed SPIKE App 3.6.1 in the sources checked on October 26, 2026; no installed version was checked. Its app-specific privacy statement says no login is required and written programs and voice recordings stay on the device. It also describes IP-address processing and region-dependent performance analytics. That is more precise than describing the whole app as collecting no data.45
For a family, a useful trial is one complete build: connect the hub, run the blocks, change one input and save the work. That reveals whether the combination suits the learner and the household device. Treat LEGO's age range as manufacturer guidance and assess the particular activity and supervision separately.3
