Rivian

Electric vehicles and driving software, with a separate future robotaxi plan.359

Nasdaq: RIVN1

Rivian brings together electric vehicles, driving software and commercial customers. For a family, the immediate choice is the vehicle and the help its current software provides. Its announced R2 robotaxi program with Uber is a separate future fleet plan, with initial deployments targeted for 2028.359

From RJ Scaringe’s startup to vehicles and software

RJ Scaringe founded Rivian in June 2009 and is identified as founder and chief executive in its 2026 proxy. Rivian describes itself as an American vehicle and technology company, manufacturing in the United States and selling directly to consumer and commercial customers. Its common stock trades on Nasdaq under RIVN.123

The current reporting picture includes R1 vehicles, the newer R2, commercial vans, and software and services. These lines create different customer relationships. A family buying a vehicle, a business operating delivery vans and a company paying for software are not buying the same thing, even when the underlying engineering comes from Rivian.4

R2's introduction is a practical turning point because the company reported that deliveries had started in the second quarter of 2026. The fleet-autonomy program builds on that vehicle family, but its development schedule and operational requirements remain separate from the retail rollout. Production of a consumer vehicle is a milestone in manufacturing, not proof of a passenger-only driving service.45

The company name, the manufacturer and the issuer

This profile follows the Rivian group and gives financial context for its listed issuer, Rivian Automotive, Inc. The retail R2 and R1S builders name Rivian Automotive, LLC as the vehicle manufacturer. Those names have distinct roles: the issuer’s consolidated results are not standalone LLC results, and neither name establishes the exact legal Autonomy+ software licensor.16

A future fleet alongside the retail business

Rivian and Uber’s March 2026 announcement describes an initial target of 10,000 autonomous R2 vehicles and an option to negotiate up to 40,000 more from 2030. Initial commercial deployments are planned for San Francisco and Miami in 2028. These are plans and options, not a present fleet count or a ride service that an R2 buyer can use today.5

The associated Uber investment could reach US$1.25 billion through 2031, subject to milestones and conditions. A maximum commitment over several years is different from money already received. Neither that financing plan nor a consumer autonomy announcement supplies a final robotaxi equipment list.45

Are Rivian R2 and R1S the same kind of family choice?

They are separate vehicle lines. The US retail R2 covered here is a five-seat vehicle; R1S has seven seats in the documented configuration. Start with the seating and luggage you need, then compare the exact model year, trim, battery and local offer in each product profile.78

Does Autonomy+ let me stop watching the road?

No. Current assistance requires the driver’s continuous attention and readiness to take control. Eligibility depends on the vehicle generation and hardware. A future platform or feature announcement does not change the instructions for a vehicle’s present software.91011

Does buying an R2 include the Uber robotaxi capability?

The retail vehicle and announced robotaxi fleet are separate contexts. The fleet plan does not establish passenger-only operation for an ordinary R2 purchase, or promise that the retail car can join that service later.59

Choosing for your household

If you want an R2 to own, assess the actual vehicle and the driver responsibilities in its current software. If you want to avoid driving, follow the future fleet program and eventually its local booking rules. Keeping those decisions separate prevents an anticipated robotaxi from becoming a promise attached to an ordinary vehicle purchase.45
