Yukai Engineering

The Tokyo hardware studio behind Qoobo and Petit Qoobo, companion cushions that respond through moving tails.36

Yukai Engineering makes small physical interactions the point of its companion products. Qoobo responds with a tail, while Petit Qoobo adds a smaller body and reactions to sound. Their appeal does not depend on a spoken answer or a humanoid face: they offer a different way to explore an interactive object at home.6

A hardware studio with a playful product language

Yukai began in December 2007 and reorganized into its present company form in October 2011. Its corporate page identifies Shunsuke Aoki as chief executive and places the business in Shinjuku, Tokyo.3

A historical company presentation describes Aoki co-founding Yukai with CTO Sagisaka in 2007, following earlier work as a teamLab co-founder and technology leader. Yukai’s corporate profile describes robot and hardware development, manufacturing and sales, including work for clients as well as its own products.34

The company’s September 2022 financing announcement named BOCCO emo, Amagami Ham Ham and kurikit alongside Qoobo in its portfolio. That dated product list shows a business broader than one cushion robot. It is useful background to Yukai’s communication and building projects, rather than a guarantee that every historical item is stocked in every market.5

Yukai announced an official US store on August 12, 2026. That store lists Qoobo and Petit Qoobo, but model and color availability still need to be checked for the destination. The regional store is a more useful starting point than assuming a global listing’s price and stock apply everywhere.78

Products and everyday interaction

The two Qoobo models share a tailed-cushion idea, with distinct sizes and responses. Choose the kind of interaction you want and the place where it will be used, then check the exact product’s care instructions.6

Qoobo

The full-size Qoobo is a cushion whose tail responds differently to stroking and rubbing, with occasional spontaneous movement. Its maker says it does not understand the meaning of words. The interaction is therefore about a physical response to handling rather than a spoken conversation.6

Petit Qoobo

Petit Qoobo uses a smaller body and adds reactions to sound and a heartbeat-like effect. These are specific differences from the larger model, so compare the two on the interaction and size you want rather than treating Petit as only a new color or package.6

Other products named in Yukai’s 2022 portfolio

BOCCO emo, Amagami Ham Ham and kurikit appeared in Yukai’s September 2022 announcement. Use their own official materials for the intended activity and current offer; the Qoobo pair’s features and support terms do not describe all of Yukai’s work.5

Mirumi

Mirumi is a small bag charm robot that responds to sounds and head patting with head movements. It offers a portable form of interaction alongside Yukai's cushion companions.12

Choosing the interaction and support

The Qoobo FAQ says not to sit or stand on the cushion or tail. Its cleaning guidance concerns the removable fur cover, not immersing the electronics. It also excludes use by babies and advises supervision for children. Read the instructions supplied with the exact model before deciding how it fits into the household.6

The full-size Qoobo uses a rechargeable battery, with its charging port near the base of the tail. Leave that area accessible where you plan to keep it and make charging part of the routine. Follow the instructions for the exact model when choosing how to position and care for it.6

What would living with it involve?

Would you prefer a response to stroking, a smaller sound-responsive object near a desk, or a different communication product? Decide that first, then consider charging, cover care and who will use it. Those choices help distinguish the two Qoobo models.56
