A four-legged industrial platform for inspection, sensing and professional tasks.1

Before you choose

Is Spot a humanoid or a robot for the home?

Spot is a four-legged industrial platform for inspection and sensing. Boston Dynamics says it is intended for trained commercial or industrial operators and is not intended for home use or children. Its familiar shape does not make it a household pet. Start with an inspection job and the people who will operate it.

Does every Spot include an arm and inspection equipment?

No. The maker describes different inspection, research and hazardous-response packages, and the Spot Arm is separately offered. The robot’s up-to-14 kg carried payload is different from the arm’s advertised up-to-11 kg lift. Ask the quotation to identify the arm, sensors, Dock and software, with the limits for that exact combination.

Can Spot repeat a route without someone steering every step?

The documented platform supports tablet control and repeatable autonomous missions, including remote launches using a Spot Dock. That does not establish success on every route. Ask to see the proposed payload complete your inspection round, deal with an obstruction and return for charging. Agree who handles exceptions and which Dock equipment is included.

How long does it run, and is it waterproof?

The specification sheet dated May 22, 2024 lists an average 90-minute runtime, 32.7 kg with battery and IP54 protection for its documented base configuration. Runtime varies with payload and environment. IP54 should not be read as waterproof, and an attached instrument needs its own limits. Confirm the specification for the unit being offered.

Do inspection images and diagnostic data leave the site?

Orbit has on-premise and cloud deployment options. The January 2026 Spot notice says Performance Metrics normally transmit when connected unless disabled; Service Logs require preauthorization or an explicit upload. Orbit Cloud Data can include images, video and maps, with access subject to customer permission. Specify hosting, access and retention for each data category.

What does a complete Spot setup cost and include?

The accepted official sources direct buyers to sales and do not establish a current complete-package price or destination-specific delivery. The 2024 sheet mentions a one-year limited warranty and premium Spot Care support, but those historical terms are not a current regional contract. Obtain a proposal covering equipment, software, training, delivery and service.

An inspection round is the starting point

Spot's familiar shape can suggest a robotic pet, but Boston Dynamics is clear about its purpose: this is an industrial machine for trained operators, not a robot intended for homes or children. Its value lies in getting sensors to places a team needs to inspect, and repeating those rounds consistently.21

The current lineup includes packages for inspection, research and hazardous response. Choosing among them starts with the information or access required: a thermal observation, a visual record or a closer look at equipment. The robot is the mobile platform; the selected sensors and software determine much of the job.1

The arm and the carried payload are different

An arm-equipped Spot is a different working configuration from a bare Spot. The separately offered Spot Arm supports manipulation through manual, semi-automated and automated actions. Its current page lists lifting up to 11 kg. Spot's 14 kg payload allowance is a different specification, concerning equipment carried on the robot.31

The manufacturer's specification sheet updated May 22, 2024 lists a 32.7 kg mass with battery, IP54 protection and an average 90-minute runtime that varies with payload and environment. These figures provide context for that documented configuration. A current quote should identify any hardware changes and the limits of every attached sensor.4

Plan the route, charging and software

Boston Dynamics documents tablet control and repeatable autonomous missions, including remote launches from a Spot Dock. A useful inspection plan needs a route, a charging arrangement and someone responsible for exceptions. Ask to see the robot complete your actual round and return for charging with the proposed payload fitted.4

Orbit adds fleet and data management and can be deployed on premise or in the cloud. That choice belongs in the purchase discussion alongside the robot, sensors and charging equipment. Ask which software rights, integrations and updates are included, especially if an inspection must feed an existing maintenance process.54

Decide who can see the inspection records

The January 2026 Spot privacy notice distinguishes inspection content from diagnostics. Performance Metrics normally upload when connected unless disabled; Service Logs need preauthorization or an explicit service upload. Orbit Cloud Data may include images, video and maps, with access subject to customer permission. A workplace should decide who can view those records before deployment.6

Buy the working configuration

Spot is offered through a sales enquiry, with configuration, delivery and service coverage to establish for the destination. The published 2024 sheet describes a limited warranty and optional Spot Care support, but a buyer needs the current contract. There is no verified complete-package price in this profile.14

Start with one inspection that currently costs time or exposes someone to a difficult location. Then ask what actionable result Spot would return, how often a person would assist and who would maintain it. If the intended job is companionship at home, the maker's stated boundary already answers the suitability question.124
