Tesla, Inc.Editorial review pending

Historical footage: Tesla's December 2023 Optimus Gen 2 film. It does not establish the current design or a consumer offer. Later generations can have different hardware and capabilities.

Optimus is Tesla's humanoid robot program. In its October 21, 2026 update, Tesla says production began in Fremont and describes the California line as being in early ramp.ReportedSource(opens in a new tab)

Where development stands

Tesla's January update identifies Gen 3 as its first design intended for mass production. Its October proxy says V3 Optimus was readied for that step. Earlier demonstrations do not define the hardware a customer might receive.ReportedSource(opens in a new tab)

How it began

Tesla announced the Tesla Bot program in August 2021. Physical prototypes followed at AI Day on September 30, 2022. These are separate milestones, not competing launch dates.Source(opens in a new tab)

Before you choose

What is Optimus?

Optimus is Tesla's humanoid robot program. This profile follows the program, so a specification from an earlier demonstration should not be read as a promise about the eventual robot you might buy.

What does Tesla want it to do?

Tesla's goal is help with unsafe, repetitive or boring tasks. Think of that as the ambition. Ask about one job you actually want done, such as putting away laundry, before assuming a general robot would suit your home.

Can I order one, and what would it cost?

Optimus is still in development. Tesla's materials linked here do not announce a consumer purchase offer, deposit scheme or price. A factory production update is a different milestone. Before planning a purchase, look for a written Tesla offer covering your region, delivery, support and total cost.

Could it take over household chores?

That remains unconfirmed here. Tesla describes software work for balance, navigation and interaction. Those goals do not tell you how reliably a delivered robot would handle your chores or how much help it would need.

What should I ask before considering one for my family?

Start with a specific task and ask who helps when it gets stuck. Then ask about people nearby, camera access, repairs and ongoing fees. These are questions for a future offer; this profile does not establish the answers.

Which generation should I be looking at?

Tesla’s 2026 documents describe Gen 3 development and manufacturing readiness. The 2021 announcement and 2022 prototypes are earlier milestones. Tesla later advertised an Optimus Gen 1 display for February 23, 2025, but that label does not identify either 2022 prototype or the showroom photograph. Its Gen 2 film was published on December 13, 2023. Use it to follow the program’s history, not to infer Gen 3 hardware or the specification of a future household robot. Look for the actual version and software package in a written offer before comparing size, hands or runtime.
