Tesla’s business spans electric cars, driving software and energy storage. Optimus extends its work into humanoid robotics, bringing a new product program alongside the vehicles and batteries the company already sells.56

How an electric-car company arrived at humanoid robots

Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning started Tesla Motors in 2003 with a plan to begin with premium electric cars and reach a wider market over time. Elon Musk joined the board in 2004 and became chief executive in October 2008. The original Roadster was followed by Model S, delivered to its first customers in June 2012.1234

Tesla has since built an energy business alongside its vehicles. Powerwall stores energy for homes and smaller commercial premises, while Megapack serves larger commercial and utility customers. The company says it is applying lessons from its driving AI to Optimus, its humanoid robot program.5

Optimus was announced as Tesla Bot in 2021, with a physical prototype demonstration following in 2022. In October 2026, Tesla reported the start of Optimus production in Fremont, an early California ramp and construction in Texas. These are milestones in building the program; the update did not include household purchase prices or delivery terms.71112

Tesla describes in-house inference-chip design. Separately, its Optimus actuator-team recruiting material describes designing and building actuators. These statements do not establish internal semiconductor fabrication, exclusive internal manufacture of robot parts or the chip generation installed in Optimus.1823

Dojo: training and inference context

Training develops an AI model; inference runs it on new information. In its April 22, 2026 update, Tesla described Dojo 3 as custom silicon being developed to reduce training costs.1518

Tesla engineering job pages checked on October 26, 2026 describe Dojo differently: one emphasizes training on fleet video, another large-scale inference with training capability. Its generation-specific role remains unresolved. These descriptions do not identify a deployed Dojo generation or the computer fitted inside a vehicle or Optimus.7161718

AI4 and the computer in a particular car

Tesla names AI4 vehicle computers in its service documentation. Our comparison of the Model 3 and Model Y service workflows suggests HW4 or Hardware 4 refers to the corresponding generation in that limited context. This equivalence is inferred. Tesla’s July 22, 2026 update also distinguishes software for AI4 from an adaptation for AI3, so the individual car’s hardware and software matter.1920

Before choosing a car, check Controls, Software, Additional Vehicle Information for its computer configuration and confirm the features available for that car in your country. FSD (Supervised) still requires an engaged driver. The support material checked on October 26, 2026 does not establish AI4-to-AI5 retrofit terms.521

AI5: a reported design milestone

In its April 22, 2026 update, Tesla reported completing the final design of its next-generation AI5 inference processor. That engineering milestone leaves the delivered vehicle or robot configuration unverified. A Tesla recruiting page checked on October 26 uses SI5, but the inspected sources do not establish a definitive AI5-to-SI5 naming change.1522

For a purchase decision, ask which named product includes the processor, what it can do in everyday use and what support comes with it. The checked support documentation does not establish AI5 retrofit eligibility, price or installation timing. Confirm those terms for the actual vehicle before relying on a future upgrade.1521

Where the different Tesla products fit

A Tesla vehicle, a home battery and a humanoid robot solve different problems. Keeping those product lines separate makes it easier to follow the company’s announcements.56

Evaluate the product you want to live with

The scale of Tesla’s car and energy businesses is useful background when following Optimus. An eventual robot purchase still needs its own practical assessment: the version offered, the jobs it can do, how much help it needs and the support available to its owner.57

Which task would make a robot useful to you?

If the answer is laundry, ask to see that task from start to finish on the version being offered. Who helps when a garment falls or the robot gets stuck? What equipment, setup and ongoing service would you need? Those answers will matter more to the household decision than an impressive factory milestone.7
