A fixed camera shows one view. The idea behind Amazon Astro is that you can send a camera to another part of the home and look through it from your phone. Amazon pairs that movement with Alexa and a screen for communication. The product covered here is the household Astro introduced in 2021, not the later business security service.14

What it can help you do

Amazon's app listing describes live viewing, sending Astro to rooms or saved viewpoints, and raising or lowering the periscope. The practical starting point is a specific view you want, such as the area where a pet usually rests. Decide whether reaching that view adds something a fixed camera cannot provide, and whether the route stays clear enough to be useful.4

Mapping and access deserve attention before the first remote session. Amazon provides out-of-bounds zones and a way to delete the map. It says navigation sensor processing happens on the device, while mapping information goes to its cloud. Enrolled Visual ID images stay on-device; live viewing and other enabled media features can use cloud services.2

Subscriptions and lifecycle

Astro's terms require internet access and warn that services may vary by area. Its privacy FAQ describes patrols and saved recordings through an applicable Ring Home subscription with linked accounts. Establish the exact plan available to your account before treating those functions as part of the purchase.32

The service history matters. GeekWire reported that Astro for Business devices would stop working on September 25, 2024, with Astro Secure also ending. Separately, Amazon staff confirmed the end of Alexa Together support on June 25, 2024. The business shutdown does not establish a shutdown of household Astro. For a home unit, confirm the services attached to your account instead of relying on the features advertised at launch.56Reported

Before buying a used household Astro, ask the seller to demonstrate setup with your phone and account. Amazon's Android app listing was accessible on October 26, 2026, but a current hardware price and an orderable new unit remain unconfirmed. Check account eligibility and the services available in your country before paying.74

Privacy and everyday responsibility

The physical off button disconnects cameras, microphones and movement sensors. It also stops Astro moving. That is a useful household decision to make together: who may start a remote view, which areas should stay off limits, and when everyone wants the device disabled.2

Amazon explicitly says Astro Services do not provide monitored emergency response or dispatch authorities. Choose it for the specific viewing or communication job you can verify, and keep arrangements for emergencies separate.3
