Moxie

EmbodiedEditorial review pending

Moxie was designed for conversations and activities at home. For a family considering a used robot, the first question is now which software will make that particular unit work. Embodied, the original maker, closed; a separate company acquired Moxie’s rights and later announced its own service sunset.21

Will a used Moxie work when it arrives?

Moxie Robots, Inc. says its server connection and subscriptions would end on June 30, 2026, and that robots are no longer for sale from its site. Older Sunlight prices and generic support answers remain lower on the same page. Those answers conflict with the dated notice, so they should not be taken as an offer of working cloud service.1

A used Moxie is not a purchase to judge from its appearance alone. Ask the seller to identify its firmware, demonstrate the intended software setup and include its original charger. Current account access and compatibility with community software are unconfirmed for any particular unit. The FAQ says the battery is not replaceable, making the condition of an older robot another question to settle before paying.13

Does OpenMoxie run entirely offline?

The original OpenMoxie project describes a computer on the same household Wi-Fi running Docker, software that hosts its local service. Its default setup also uses an OpenAI account with paid credits for speech recognition and conversation. Someone in the household would need to manage that computer, account and spending; running part of the system at home does not make it wholly offline.3

OpenMoxie uses a web interface rather than the parent app, and its README lists newer Ocean Explorer, Animal Faces and Story Maker activities as missing. The maintainer identifies jbeghtol/openmoxie as the original project and warns that similarly named alternatives are unaffiliated. Ask which project a seller means and compare the activities it supports with the ones your family wants.3

Can owners still retrieve old conversations?

The successor company’s notice offered export or deletion through the app before June 30, 2026. That deadline has passed. The company also says no data transferred from Embodied. Neither statement confirms what an owner can access or delete today, so an existing owner needs a current answer about their own account.1

The successor’s December 2025 notices describe audio, video, transcripts and faceprint data, with a separate parental-consent process for children. They do not describe the data handling of a community installation. Before using one, establish which AI service receives conversations, what it stores and who can change the settings. That decision belongs alongside the choice of activities, especially in a shared family room.453

Sources and notes

  1. 1. Moxie: service sunset and support FAQ

The specific sunset notice names June 30, 2026 for the server connection and automatic subscription cancellation. Lower answers still advertise Sunlight at US$29.99 monthly or a US$4.99 day pass and describe continuing support. That contradiction remains unresolved; neither the fees nor the support wording establish working service after the deadline. The notice’s export and deletion deadline is also past. Actual account access and cancellation were not tested.

  2. 2. Toyota Ventures: 2020 Moxie founder interview

The investor interview dated May 18, 2020 was available as an indexed excerpt. It describes the original Moxie launch and conversational activity role. It is historical background, not evidence of a present offer, service entitlement or therapeutic outcome.

  3. 3. Original OpenMoxie project

The jbeghtol/openmoxie README identifies this as the original project and warns that openmoxie.org and OpenMoxie 2.0 are unaffiliated. It describes a local computer, Docker and paid OpenAI credits, web configuration and missing activities. No setup was run and compatibility with a particular robot’s firmware is unconfirmed. Local hosting does not make the documented default AI processing wholly offline.

  4. 4. Moxie Robots: December 2025 privacy notice

The December 6, 2025 notice describes the successor service’s audio, video, transcripts, faceprints and other customer content. It is not the original Embodied policy or a privacy policy for a community OpenMoxie installation. Post-sunset access, retention and deletion still need confirmation.

  5. 5. Moxie Robots: children’s privacy notice

This December 6, 2025 notice describes parental consent for under-13 users and supervised accounts in the successor service. It does not establish child safety, compliant operation or appropriate conversation settings for a separate community setup.
