One name, several generations
Honda's research began in 1986, with experimental machines leading through the E-series and P-series to ASIMO. The company also records a rental-business version in 2001. That history is more precise than describing ASIMO as a robot that never had any commercial use, even though it was not a conventional household appliance.1
The specifications here refer to November 2011: 130 cm tall, 48 kg, 57 degrees of freedom and a maximum speed of 9 km/h. Honda lists 40 minutes of walking operation and separately describes automatic recharging. Earlier figures of 54 kg and 34 degrees of freedom belong to the preceding model comparison, not alternative measurements of the same 2011 robot.2Inferred
What Honda demonstrated
Honda describes the 2011 ASIMO anticipating an approaching person's movement, distinguishing simultaneous voices and handling a bottle to pour water into a cup. It also demonstrated sign language. These are specific capabilities in Honda's development account; they are not a claim that Robots in the House tested ASIMO or that it could manage every household task.12
Pouring a drink is a useful example to think through. In your own kitchen, who would find the bottle, choose a cup, clear a space and clean up a spill? Watching the pouring motion answers only part of that larger job. ASIMO's demonstrations help identify the pieces a helpful robot would have to bring together.1
Its place today
Miraikan says its regular ASIMO demonstrations ended on March 31, 2022. Honda's Aoyama farewell-era exhibition also ran through that date. These are concrete historical endpoints; they should not become a claim that an ASIMO can never appear at another event. Check a venue's current timetable before planning a visit.34
Honda continues to research robots, including an avatar platform with human remote operation and AI assistance. That work draws on ASIMO technology but has a different identity and control model. ASIMO remains a useful historical reference for motion and manipulation; its old demonstrations do not establish a current sale, warranty or supported installation for a family home.52
