“Self-driving” covers a lot of ground in a showroom. It can mean a car that helps steer through motorway traffic, changes lanes after your approval, or follows a route through intersections. Those are meaningful conveniences. They also leave you with very different jobs.
Best overall: Tesla Model Y with FSD (Supervised). For a US family buyer who puts driving automation high on the list, it offers our strongest combination of useful city-and-highway assistance, five-seat SUV practicality and purchase price. For a mainly highway commute, start with the Ford Mustang Mach-E and Chevrolet Equinox EV. BMW, Porsche and Rivian deserve attention for buyers with different vehicle priorities, while XPENG and AVATR offer relevant alternatives in mainland China.
These are buying recommendations based on published capabilities, purchase options and outside reporting, not our own road tests. All eight selections require an attentive driver. The model-specific requirements are set out below.
Prices, range and the shortlist
The year means shopping in 2026. Some current choices carry a 2027 model-year badge. Packages and software below apply to the named market; the same car sold elsewhere can be a different proposition.
Prices below are published vehicle references, not final dealer quotes. Assistance costs are shown separately. US figures exclude taxes and unlisted fees; the Porsche price includes UK VAT. Range figures retain their test cycle: EPA, WLTP and CLTC are not interchangeable, and your weather, speed and equipment will affect the result.10
| EV and reference configuration | Published vehicle price | Stated range | Driving package and extra cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| US$45,990 vehicle price | 355 miles, EPA estimate | FSD (Supervised): $99/month plus tax after the displayed one-month trial. Best overall in our US shortlist.1 | |
| US$41,090 builder starting price* | 260 miles, EPA estimate | Technology/BlueCruise equipment extra; BlueCruise service options include $49.99/month or $495/year. Get the complete equipped quote.2 | |
| US$41,795 base MSRP | 319 miles, EPA estimate | Super Cruise and required packages extra. Our October 26 configuration total was $50,050 including destination, before tax and dealer/government fees.3 | |
| US$83,990 starting vehicle price | 329 miles, EPA estimate | Autonomy+: $2,500 once or $49.99/month after the applicable trial. Destination and other fees extra.4 | |
| US$61,500 MSRP, plus $1,350 destination | 383 miles, preliminary BMW estimate using EPA procedures | Highway & Commuting Assistant is optional; confirm package price and included term in the order.5 | |
| £73,100 including VAT | 327–379 miles, combined WLTP, depending on equipment | Drive Assist £884 extra; registration and final on-road charges are separate.6 | |
| RMB186,800 suggested retail price | 625 km, CLTC | VLA Lite/NGP listed as standard. Higher Ultra SE/Ultra hardware packages cost extra; some functions require updates.7 | |
| RMB323,900 suggested retail price | 735 km, CLTC | Huawei ADS advanced city/parking package costs extra. Obtain the current entitlement and price; do not assume the advertised vehicle price includes it.8 |
Ford price note: its model pages advertise $40,595 base MSRP, while its build selector showed $41,090. Use the actual configured quote. The 320-mile Mach-E headline requires the optional extended-range battery; it does not describe the standard-range car priced here. Likewise, BMW’s 434-mile figure uses the no-cost 20-inch summer-tyre option, rather than the standard all-season setup.25
Best overall: Model Y with FSD

FSD’s appeal is the range of driving it is designed to assist with: turns, intersections and navigation through city streets as well as highways. That breadth is why it earns our best-overall recommendation for US buyers seeking driving assistance, rather than a narrower highway-only role. Tesla still requires active supervision, and functionality depends on the car’s hardware, software and region.1
There is meaningful outside experience behind that recommendation. MotorTrend gave FSD v14 its 2026 driver-assistance award, after choosing Super Cruise the previous year. Its account drew on thousands of miles, largely in fair weather on decent roads. That supports taking FSD seriously; it does not establish that every delivered software version handles every difficult road well.1
The selected Premium RWD’s $45,990 vehicle price and 355-mile EPA estimate give the recommendation a useful everyday foundation. FSD’s $99 monthly subscription adds $1,188 over twelve paid months, before tax. Include that ongoing cost in your comparison. Before buying, confirm the actual hardware and software in the vehicle you are being offered, then arrange a demonstration on the sort of route you drive.1
FSD is not exclusive to the Model Y. The Model 3 is the sedan alternative; Cybertruck is the pickup alternative. Eligible Model S and Model X owners can also subscribe, although Tesla reports that those product lines were retired in mid-2026. Treat them as existing-car or used-car comparisons, and check the particular hardware, software and subscription eligibility rather than assuming every Tesla offers identical features.9
Highway driving: compare the Mach-E and Equinox EV

If most of the work you want to hand over is maintaining a lane and distance on a divided highway, BlueCruise and Super Cruise belong near the top of your list. Both permit hands-free driving under their stated conditions while requiring attention to the road.23
The 2026 Mach-E offers BlueCruise with automatic lane change through its Technology Package. Ford lists service options at US$49.99 a month or $495 a year, alongside a one-time option offered when buying the vehicle. MotorTrend’s short drive with BlueCruise 1.5 in a 2025 Mach-E provides useful context for its lane-change behaviour, but we would still check the installed version in a 2026 car.2
The Equinox EV LT 2 is the sensible counterquote. Our $50,050 configuration included the $3,355 Active Safety Package 3, required $3,100 Convenience Package II and $1,800 destination charge. That is a more useful comparison than its $41,795 base price alone. Super Cruise also needs an eligible service plan or trial and compatible roads. Check your regular journey against the system’s coverage before comparing monthly payments.3
We would choose between these two on the equipped price, route fit and the car itself. The evidence here does not justify declaring one universally smoother or safer.
Premium EVs: three different reasons to spend more

BMW’s iX3 is our first premium option to investigate when attentive hands-free driving is central to the purchase. The available Highway & Commuting Assistant supports it at up to 85 mph where conditions and speed limits allow, with suggested lane changes confirmed by a glance at the corresponding mirror. BMW reported that US deliveries had begun contributing to sales during the third quarter of 2026.5
Porsche deserves a different pitch. Its current UK Macan 4 Electric configurator lists Drive Assist as an £884 option. Porsche describes monitored lane guidance and predictive speed control in its MY2026 explanation; confirm the precise functions in your MY2027 order. The older InnoDrive name matters: Euro NCAP’s June 2025 “Very Good” assessment covered that earlier system, not a blanket endorsement of every later Macan package.6
Rivian’s R1S is the one we’d investigate when the larger vehicle and seating arrangement are the priority. Its Universal Hands-Free function requires supervision and explicitly does not stop or slow for traffic lights or stop signs. That limit belongs in the buying decision, even if the vehicle suits the household beautifully. Choose the seating you need and value the functions delivered today.4
China: compare the software you are buying
The G6 625 Max Flagship is a battery-electric model, distinct from the range-extended versions on the same configuration page. Its mainland-China table lists a price of RMB186,800 and standard VLA Lite assistance. City and highway functions are listed, but some features depend on software updates. It is the first of these two Chinese options we’d investigate when controlling the purchase price matters.7
The AVATR 12 Ultra dual-motor BEV lists RMB323,900 before the advanced software package is accounted for. Its Huawei ADS city navigation, parking-to-parking assistance and several related functions require that paid package. The maker also identifies features arriving through later updates. Do not assume that a sensor-rich car includes every function shown in the advertisement.8
Both warrant a demonstration of the exact delivered software. Their mainland-China capabilities should not be assumed to travel with an exported car.
Our buying recommendation
Start with your most frequent journey. For US city and highway assistance, the Model Y is our best-overall choice. For a highway-heavy routine, get matched Mach-E and Equinox EV quotes. Move to the BMW, Porsche or Rivian because the complete vehicle fits your needs, with a clear understanding of its assistance package. In China, compare the G6’s lower entry cost with the AVATR’s paid city-driving functions.
Make the demonstration specific: the junction, motorway section or parking manoeuvre you want help with. Then ask the seller to identify the hardware, installed software, included features and renewal costs in writing. Give promised future features no weight in today’s purchase price.
